RE 2020 obliges, the biosourced slips into paint formulations, insulation, coatings, panels... With more simplicity and comfort to improve implementation ©FBTInnovations in finishing works: focus on Bio-based and low carbon Innovations in finishing works: focus on Bio-based and low carbon

Caption: Since the beginning of 2020, the FBT factory has been transforming Camargue rice straw into panels. With thermal and acoustic performance, biosourced insulation is also unbeatable in terms of installation comfort and environmental impact.

With RE 2020, manufacturers have set their sights on sustainable building. Products and materials made from recycled products are developing where the sectors have been able to structure collection, sorting and recovery. The ambition also tends towards low carbon and in all areas.

Low-carbon aluminum is emerging in windows, the first low environmental impact adhesive mortar was unveiled this summer, when the efforts made by manufacturers on installation comfort are not without consequences on the carbon impact of the implementation.

At the same time, bio-sourced products are creeping into paint formulations, insulation, coatings, wooden panels, etc. From an epiphenomenon reserved for an informed clientele, demand shows a desire for virtuous, locavore products and materials, in phase with environmental issues, of which closely linked energy performance has become a prerequisite.

Comfort inside and out

Another impact of the Covid: confinement has moved professional activities into the private sphere, exacerbating the problems of comfort and well-being. Of course, with their ability to improve indoor air quality, bio-based products also invest in the R&D departments of manufacturers for this reason.

But in this niche of comfort and well-being, innovation also took hold outside this year. Alongside personalization and made-to-measure, motorization if possible connected to increase the comfort of closures and outdoor equipment, ways of diversification are emerging.

Like the canvas roof on two posts to provide protection for the terrace, or with a mobile structure to reveal the sky. Because after an arms race that boosted the added value of this equipment, they are now also seeking to democratize.

The opinion of the company

Finishing Innovations: Focus on the Bio-based and low carbon

“Customers are sensitive to short circuits”

What is your vision of the renovation market?

Loïc Trudelle: For the moment our activity is dense and our order book is very full. We are rather optimistic, with the implementation of the France Relance plan which goes in the direction of energy renovation.

Of course, nothing is perfect, like the terms and conditions for applying government incentives, which are sometimes complicated for us, and therefore, for our customers, to understand. But in any case, this plan goes in the direction of giving work to companies.

You are a manufacturer and installer of wood joinery. How do you explain your good level of activity?

L.T. : Containment certainly contributed to this. Households cloistered at home spent less, and decided to carry out improvement works. Most of our orders concern the renovation of doors and windows by looking for thermal performance.

In addition, we have more and more prospects who are city dwellers, often Parisians, who contact us because they have decided to leave the city to settle in the countryside. In addition, during the confinement, all public contracts came to a standstill, then restarted at the same time with the imperative of completing the allocated budgets before the end of the year.

Are regulatory changes affecting your profession?

L.T. : If we are not directly concerned by the next RE 2020, we feel that our customers are interested in the low carbon dimension. We manufacture windows in oak but also in exotic wood.

Until recently people were not interested in the fact that these woods come from Africa with long transport times, especially looking at the price. Today, some customers are willing to pay more for French oak because it is supplied in a short circuit. In addition, thanks to the 5.5% VAT on energy renovation work, customers prefer to have us work rather than install their doors or windows themselves.

How do you see the future?

L. T.: I am quite calm about our market. It will be supported by financial incentives linked to the France Relance plan. Because our order book is substantial, we are rather confident, especially since it is enough to go to the city centers to see that there is still a lot of single glazing joinery to be changed.

Product selection

Optimax Habito by Placo and Isover

No fur

By combining ultra-resistant plasterboard and patented installation accessories, this interior wall lining eliminates metal furring and increases productivity on site. The mechanical strength of glass wool in GR 32 or GR 30 panels or rolls makes it easy to handle. Habito plasterboard attaches to Optimax supports and reduces the number of screws by two. In addition, without metal fur, the passage of cables is facilitated, construction waste and risk of injury are reduced, the space to be insulated does not lose surface area: it is possible to integrate glass wool in 160 mm while by limiting window coverage to 180 mm.

Utherm Floor Comfort dB by Unilin

Less noise, less thickness

This plate is dedicated to the thermo-acoustic insulation of floors and floors, both new and renovation. Two-in-one, it incorporates a thin 2.5 mm glass veil underlay. Result: the attenuation of impact noise is 22 dB for 28 mm. In polyurethane, it benefits from the advantages of this material: thermal resistance R up to 4.65 m2.k/W for a thin thickness ranging from 28 to 104 mm, resistance to compression, settling, humidity and time. With dimensions of 1,000 x 1,200 mm, this solution is recommended under concrete slab, floating screed (fluid or traditional) under sealed or glued covering. It is also suitable for reversible flooring.

Omega PoBit Plus by Isocell

Air and moisture proof

Single-component, solvent-free, waterproof in welds or joints, this spray paste is characterized by good adhesion to a maximum of supports. It is used against dampness with draining water or as a vapor barrier to be sprayed. In this case, it functions as an airtight film. Its application by spraying makes it possible to dispense with the laborious cleaning of tools and to quickly seal hard-to-reach areas. After a short drying time, the material is rainproof and can be plastered and glued. Its fields of application: base of wooden constructions, second level of drainage under the window sill, exterior walls, drilling areas, protection against splashing water.

Delta-Fassade Color by Doerken

Colored rain barrier

This colored HPV rain barrier for perforated or translucent facade coverings uses the color pigments used for Lucite water-based professional facade paint. In order to attest to its performance, this membrane has undergone numerous tests at the Scientific and Technical Building Center (CSTB): test in Xenon tank exposing it to the entire solar prism (UV, infrared and visible light ) proving its longevity; fatigue and ruin tests reproducing the effect of high winds proving its resistance to tearing; direct sun exposure test in situ in Florida; reaction to fire Euroclass B equivalent M1 non-flammable.

Eurotoit Montagne by Recticel

Safe steep sarking

This four-sided tongue-and-groove insulation panel provides more installation safety on sloping roofs, and in particular those with steep slopes in the mountains. It is coated with a siding designed for better grip of safety shoes for more comfort during installation. Anti-reflective, this facing also limits glare. Thin (100, 120, 132 and 160 mm), light and easy to handle (dimensions 1,200 x 1,000 mm), for new construction and renovation, these Acermi-certified and A+ rated panels offer excellent thermal performance: Lambda 0.022.
