Menstrual panties: "I can even wear them without having my period"

Our journalist tested menstrual panties, an alternative to traditional sanitary protection. And for her, the experience was a failure, to say the least. We asked our readers how they had apprehended them, and gave the floor to women for whom it was an adapted solution, even a release.

"I appreciate the practical side, I put on panties like the other days"

Anaïs, 35 years old, Paris

“I appreciate the practical side, I put on panties like the other days, no layering effect, extra layer, risk of it moving, noise – the plastic side of some pads can be noisy. No waste. No need to think about bringing protection. No hassle to change it, to throw it away… No need to go to the bathroom with your purse or to wrap your used towel in PQ – to be able to throw it in a bin outside the cabin when it is not there are none inside.

On the other hand, I have a really heavy flow and I haven't yet found the towel that can hold me all day long without having to think about it. And there is always the feeling of humidity and the cleaning: it is a logistics of rinsing, soaking then washing. Finally, you have to take into account the cost: minimum 30 euros per panty and to be comfortable, you need at least half a dozen. »

"I discovered a feeling of absolute comfort, which I hardly find in my classic panties"

Mathilde, 34 years old, Nantes

It's been 3 years since I started, and I'm delighted. This solution changed my relationship to rules. Following the revelations about the composition of sanitary protection, I wondered about what I had been using 8 days a month every month for 18 years (and that I was still going to continue to use for 20 years…). And it was by taking a step back from the question that I realized the ecological impact it had. Two of my zero-waste friends were already using menstrual panties out of ecological conviction and recommended this solution to me. At the time, only an American brand sold it. It already offered several models depending on the flow. So I was able to make myself a fairly complete panel adapted to my cycle.

From the first fitting, it was a revelation! I expected granny panties with an adult diaper look. So I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw these models in soft material, with a modern design and very thin compared to what I imagined. Having only worn sanitary napkins before, I was not bothered by the feeling of humidity as some have been. But above all, I discovered what it was like to spend a full day without being afraid of stains. What relaxation!

So of course, I'm not saying that there weren't one or two accidents. But most of the time it was just because the flow was too much for the capacity of the panties. In two or three months maximum, I learned to target which model was suitable for which day of the cycle, at the exchange rate and since then, no overflow!

Culottes menstruelles :

In addition, having opted for very "enveloping" models, I discovered a feeling of absolute comfort, which I hardly find in my classic panties. They stay in place, do not fit in the buttocks, do not move...

As for maintenance, it's a little more restrictive than disposable protections, of course, but as soon as I wash one of my panties, I feel a little proud, telling myself that I'm not giving in to easy things at all- disposable. Previous generations must have done this for tens, hundreds, thousands of years. You just have to learn to live with it again. At the end of the day or night, I wash them with cold water and Marseille soap. And at the end of my cycle, I make a super fast machine, dedicated to panties.

In short, you will have understood, unlike the journalist who (dis)tested menstrual panties, I am an ultra-convinced follower. Everyone must find the solution best suited to their cycle, their body, their daily life. For my part, I found my solution and I stay there!

“I am super happy and liberated! »

Charlotte, 34 years old, Poitiers

“It works very well and I have been using them for between 6 and 8 months. I am super happy and liberated! The only problem is the size: I haven't yet found one that is the perfect size and I'm tired of the black color. But with everything coming out right now I'm going to buy some new ones. Considering the price, one per month. Just to be quiet in a few months and to be able to wear only that. Too hasty! »

“I bought some during confinement and I am delighted”

Judith, 37, Paris

“Menstrual panties are a revolution for me! Finally an alternative, I bought some during confinement and I'm delighted. Going to the office or on a report (I'm a photographer) without worrying about having protection with me, it's a real freedom found. I told my mom about it who told me she wore it when she was young. It's funny to realize that there too, we were created needs.

On the other hand, my 20-year-old niece was disgusted when I told her about it. Another 13 year old niece asked me to buy her one. Now I can look at my menstrual horizon with more serenity, with fewer pads and tampons in my drawers and waiting for the next step: menopause! »

"Honestly, the night is amazing"

Lena, 26 years old, Paris

“Personally, I bought two different brands: Repeat and Fempo. The first one was horrible: disastrous quality, unpleasant, wet effect, transfer on clothes… Fempo is good, but for the night. If not in pants, you can have the impression of having a diaper. But honestly, at night, it's amazing. Currently, I'm looking for a finer day panty but I don't regret it at all. »

"Menstrual panties are useful for me at the very beginning and at the end of the period"

Emilie, 32 years old, Pontault-Combault

“I have a very important flow. I can't use the panties on the second and third day when the flow is at max. Menstrual panties therefore only serve me at the very beginning and at the end of the period. It allows me to save tampons and towels when the flow is low. On the other hand, I am disappointed with the dry effect (which I don't find crazy) and I find that there are odors. »

"Suitable for quiet days at home, but not at work or at night"

Clara, 25, Nancy

" The horror ! I had one today at work, I am a physiotherapist. White blouse + rules + menstrual panties: it makes a very bad combo. The day was long. It wasn't the first time I wore it but usually I stayed quiet at home and I was convinced. But as soon as we do something a little physical and move a lot, it doesn't follow. And that's a shame. So I find it suitable for quiet days at home but neither at work nor for the night! »

“I can sew as many as I want”

Clemence, 34 years old, Nantes

“But this is the revolution! I love my period panties, I regret not having had these in college to avoid pads that go "scrutch-scrutch". I started with 3 Fempo, convinced by the concept but not by the external material of the model taken, I tested one from Jho, there everything suits me. But suddenly I only have four, I think we need a larger stock for it to be really easy to wear. I tested the Chouette Kit which allows you to sew your panties. And there super, I am convinced of the concept, the absorption, the pattern and I will be able to sew myself as much as I want! My hand-sewn panties:

"I can wear it without having my period"

Marion, 29 years old, Alfortville

“For the year 2020, I have launched a zero waste challenge for everything bathroom. I had already switched to the cup which does not prevent toxic shock, in the same way as tampons. And it wasn't easy to manage at work so I was looking for an easier way to be able to manage my periods. So I tried period panties.

Being in an ecological approach, I looked at the local level, that's why I chose Sisters Republic. I find them pretty and it was important for me not to end up with big panties all stained and horrible. If I haven't done my laundry for the week, I can even wear them without having my period. It's part of my lingerie.

It has become my main way of managing my periods. When I get to the period when they are coming, I will put the cup or have a sanitary napkin in the bag, just in case. Panties are for me a hygienic, ecological and financially advantageous solution. I took two and the brand I chose allows me to select a model but also the level of absorption. I've never had any issues with it overflowing and the smell is a lot less smelly than with a tampon or towel. »
