Women of Paris, ahead of the sixties

Make way for the women of Paris. In the sixties, the four dancers Raymonde Bronstein, Anne Lefébure, Hélène Longuet and Anne-Marie Royer decided to sing in unison, accompanied by an orchestra, yé-yé music under the name Les Parisiennes. But at the same time, a large number of singers from the Capital invaded the airwaves.

With this compilation bringing together the best of lesser-known Parisian female voices from the 1960s, Diggers Factory has chosen to make it a special focus for this first part of Record Store Day (the second being scheduled for July 17). We will appreciate Jacqueline Taïeb and her hits "7 hours in the morning" or "Tonight I'm going home", "Tigers and twinks" by actress Christine Delaroche (revealed in the series "Belphégor ou le Fantôme du Louvre" ) or even Cosette with “The hair in the eyes”.

Mato, a rare 45 rpm from the dub label

Stix Records, a sub- label of Favorite Recordings, is back! This time, spotlight on the dub tracks of composer and producer Thomas Blanchot, under the identity of Mato. On side A, Mato reinterprets the infamous “Summer Madness”, originally composed by Kool & The Gang. In interstellar dub music mode, with the right amount of strummed melodies and tender chords modeled on the Fender Rhodes. On the B side, place to "Use Me", composed by Bill Withers on his album "Still Bill". The funky clavinets curl up on a melodica line to burst into infinity. The record has already sold out even before the covers are in stock. This is called talent.

Hailu Mergia, master of ethio-jazz

Hailu Mergia's gift n' is more to prove. A true icon of the Ethio-jazz scene of the seventies, in Addis Ababa, alongside Mulatu Astatke or Girma Bèyènè, the keyboardist fled Ethiopia in 1981 to become a taxi driver in Washington. It was his meeting with Brian Shimkovitz, the founder of the American label Awesome Tapes From Africa, in 2014, which put him back in the saddle.

This independent label is offering Hailu Mergia's second album for this summer of 2021. Baptized “Tezeta” and initially published in 1975, it had become almost impossible to find for nearly three decades. The tapes in this reissue have been remastered by Jessica Thompson. There are unique and funky interpretations of standards and popular songs in the typical style of the Walias Band, as demonstrated by the hits “Endegena”, “Zengadyw Dereku” or “Gumegum”.

Nina Simone and Etta James, the Montreux years

July 2 to 17 , the Montreux Jazz Festival is resisting and has chosen to keep its edition despite the Covid-19, but with a revised edition. In partnership with BMG, a new vinyl collection is released that looks back on the festival's 55-year history, with legendary performances and rare recordings from the most emblematic artists in the world of the blue note.

The sequel after the ad

To kick off the festivities, Nina Simone and Etta James are the godmothers of these “The Montreux Years”. Designed as double LPs, these tracks come from Claude Nobs' vast collection of audiovisual material (Montreux Sounds). These unreleased recordings have been restored and offer the best possible immersion in these historic live performances.

For Nina Simone, the collection includes recordings from her five legendary concerts in Montreux in 1968, 1976, 1981, 1987 and 1990, and is carried by covers of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" or “Ne Me Quitte Pas” by Jacques Brel, or the thunderous “My Baby Just Cares For Me”.

For Etta James, these are her performances in 1977, 1978, 1989, 1990 and 1993. They sum up and reflect all her artistic dynamism and her lasting impact in the world of jazz, as demonstrated by her medley around from “At Last”, “Trust In Me” and “Sunday Holiday Kind Of Love”. Indispensable.

Helena Meirelles, queen of the viola caipira

Spanish label Vampisoul continues to put Brazil in the spotlight with this superb compilation of the revered queen of the viola caipira: Helena Meirelles. With this guitar, one of the regional variants of the Brazilian viol, the musician climbed, at the time, into the top 100 of the best guitarists in the world according to Guitar Player Magazine. And we understand why!

Music: All Trending Top Vinyls of June: the best of Records Day with the Rolling Stones, Michel Legrand, Francis Lai or Manu Dibango

This double-disc anthology reveals all of Helena Meirelles' talent. Like “Guaxo” and its ultra-melodic guitar riff, which stays in the head for hours. Or the title "Saudades Do Meu Velho Pai", drawn from the baião folk musical genre, originating in the Nordeste, here skilfully deconstructed and rhythmic. An essential record, reissued on vinyl for the first time.

Black Sabbath, heavy “Sabotage”

On July 28, 1975, Black Sabbath released their sixth album on Vertigo Records. A new stage for the British heavy metal band, in the midst of a crisis with its manager at the time, Patrick Meehan. At the time, when Black Sabbath entered Morgan Studios in Willesden in North West London to record 'Sabotage', the sound that came out was heavy and powerful. The guitars are louder than usual. Because the band at Ozzy Osbourne has really big on the potato. And intends to make it heard on this dark production.

This disc will undoubtedly rise to the rank of one of the best of the group. After several reissues, notably of “Vol.4”, BMG is now devoting its super deluxe box set to “Sabotage”, on 4 180-gram vinyls. With even a replica of the Japanese 45 rpm “Am I Going Insane (Radio)/Hole In The Sky”. In addition to the 16 live tracks recorded at the Asbury Park Convention Hall in New Jersey, August 5, 1975. Or the color poster of the Sabotage 1975 tour. For the fans, the real ones.

Vaudou Game, magical afro funk

Constrained to confinement, too, Peter Solo and his Voodoo Game have left free runs to their imagination, in the studio. Initially part for an EP, this confined meeting finally gave birth to a large disc. On "Noussin" ("Stay strong" in Mina, the majority dialect in Togo), we obviously find the African and bewitched funk of Voodoo Game, the group's trademark. And it is at Hot Casa Records that it takes place.

Here or there, the inhabited conductor Peter Solo, originally from Aneho-Glidji, intends to raise awareness around the world about ecology, the current environmental crisis and global warming. On all of these titles, traditional voodoo songs mingle once again with afro funk, highlife, P-funk, psych rock and other screaming disco. But, for this record, Vaudou Game has decided to completely revamp its line-up and part ways with its brassy guard for the first time. Exit, so saxophone, trumpet and trombone to invite an arsenal of keyboards. Even more intense, therefore.

Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek, modern Anatolia

In the Anatolian steppe, the psych-pop of Derya Yildirim resounds. Accompanied by her group Simsek, the Berlin-based Turkish singer and multi-instrumentalist has made a name for herself thanks to her contemporary covers of traditional folk ballads from this vast block of territory located at the western end of Asia.

After a revealing first album “Kar Yagar”, the band is back with an EP called “Dost 1”. With its complex and uninhibited melodies, and its furious rhythms, the bass undulates with the chords of a psychedelic organ, like the opening song “The Trip”. Or the rewriting of the ancestral Alevi poem from Anatolia “Haydar Haydar”, which has been handed down since the 17th century and which today is hummed in modern tones. Sumptuous.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, best-of half of Oasis

After the fatal dispute, backstage at the Rock en Seine festival in 2009, announcing the separation of Oasis, Noel Gallagher decides to launch his career on his side. With former Oasis pianist Mark Rowe, drummer Jeremy Stacey of The Lemon Tree and bassist Russell Pritchard, he formed the group High Flying Birds, which has now released a double album.

Composed of 18 tracks to celebrate his 10-year career, this album includes songs from all three High Flying Birds albums and three EPs. For the occasion, two new songs have been specially produced by Noel Gallagher. First "We're On Our Way Now", floating music and britpop par excellence. Then, "Flying On The Ground", more rhythmic and melancholic beats its measure in rhythm with Noel's guitar and an armada of bowed strings and choirs. Available in several formats, this best-of will notably be available in a picture disc version, on numbered colored double vinyl with an exclusive lithograph.

Hoodoo Fushimi, synth groove

The 180g label continues its work as a miner of Japanese music with this superb reissue of the disc of Minoru “Hoodoo” Fushimi: “Kenka Oyaji”. Released in 1987, this album quickly became a classic of the Japanese electro funk genre, imagined by this high school teacher, who lets his mind wander on machines and imagines a strange groove, once his students' copies have been corrected. Here, the many Casio, Roland or Yamaha synths respond to each other in melody under a layer of rhythm boxes and a string of samples. But good !

Bandit Bandit explodes "Nyctalope" in an exclusive teleconcert connected to 220 volts

Bandit Bandit, electrified second EP

After a remarkable first EP, the raw rock of the Montpellier duo Bandit Bandit develops a little more on a second disc called "Tachycardie". Staged with a superb cover by photographer Boris Allin alias Boby, it is a concentrate of 220-volt guitar chords ("Nil"), binary rhythms exploded on a bass drum ("Siamese Love"), and even sounds like a ballad (“Disorganized”). Everything there transpires rock, raw and metallic, played and sung by the sharp ears of Maëva Nicolas and Hugo Herleman. A couple who began their romantic and musical adventure after a perfect match on Tinder... French rock, in 2021, that's it. And we ask for more.

Frank Foster/Fela Kuti/The Notorious B.I.G.

The sequel after the ad

- Major works of militant jazz and one of the most important jazz-funk albums of the 20th century, Frank Foster's "The Loud Minority" is now covered by the excellent Wewantsounds. Recorded in two days by Frank Foster, with big names such as Elvin Jones, Stanley Clarke, Airto, Cecil and Dee Dee Bridgewater and 'Hannibal' Marvin Peterson, this record is one of the most committed of its time. Released on Mainstream Records, Bob Shad's label, in 1972, it is now remastered with a 20-page booklet of never-before-seen photos, lyrics and interviews telling the story of the album. History to understand how these four funky titles carried by two distinct formations playing simultaneously have revolutionized the jazz world. Frank Foster, “The Loud Minority” (Wewantsounds)

- The master of Afrobeat is back with his Africa 70 “Open & Close”. Recorded in Lagos in 1971 and originally released on the His Master's Voice label, this disc is the seventh album by the Nigerian conductor and musical guru. With only four tracks, he still writes the definition of groove. Fela Kuti & the Africa 70 – Open & Close [PIAS]

- On the rap side, we find the second posthumous album of Notorious B.I.G. composed of duets with the biggest names in rap including "Ultimate Rush" with Missy Elliott, P. Diddy, Eminem and Obie Trice on "It Has Been Said" or 2Pac, Mary J. Blige and Nas who accompany him on " Living in Pain”. But also the reggae star Bob Marley on “Living in Pain” or the nu-metal group KoRn on “Wake Up”. This album is available for the first time on vinyl with a bonus 45 rpm. Notorious B.I.G., “Biggie Duets: The Final Chapter” (Warner)

Michel Legrand/Rolling Stones/Howard Roberts

The sequel after the ad

- For this first part of Record Store Day, Wewantsounds reissues one of Michel Legrand's best soundtracks composed for Jacques Deray's film "La Piscine", released in 1969 with the couple Alain Delon, Romy Schneider. Composed just after "The Thomas Crown Affair", this music is the perfect mix of inventive melodies, jazzy instrumentals and pop and funky tracks. This soundtrack was initially released exclusively in Japan, becoming very rare. Three never before released bonus tracks have been added, with gatefold cover art by Eric Adrian Lee. As a bonus, a 45 rpm from the BOF by Michel Legrand on “Un Homme Est Mort” released in 1972 is included in its original cover. Michel Legrand, “La Piscine/A man is dead” (Wewantsounds)

- On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the release of "Hot Rocks", the best of the Rolling Stones is pressed in double color album format. We find the greatest hits of the British group such as "Jumpin'Jack Flash", "Street Fighting Man", "Sympathy for the Devil" or "Gimme Shelter". With bonus lithographs embellished with photos by Michael Joseph. Rolling Stones, "Hot Rocks" (Carolina)

- Released in 1975 on Bryan Records, the soundtrack to the film "Lord Shango" directed by Ray Marsh and composed by Howard Roberts. A bizarre cinematography halfway between horror, supernatural, spiritual drama and contemplative romance, “Lord Shango” tells the story of a priest who has returned from the dead to take revenge and punish non-believers. He will participate in the Blaxploitation movement. This BOF is now available in reissue thanks to the work of Tidal Waves Music, on 180 gram vinyl, with great bursts of Afro rhythm and funk brass. A massacre. Howard Roberts; “Lord Shango (Original 1975 Motion Picture Soundtrack)” (Tidal Waves Music)

- When Manu Dibango meets the members of Buena Vista Social Club in Cuba, it gives the album "Cubafrica". In 1998, the Cameroonian saxophonist and singer went to record a disc with El Cuarteto Patria, closely linked to the Buena Vista Social Club and some of whose members played with the band at Compay Segundo. This reissue proves the syncretic aspect of the music, open to the five continents. The label of the Parisian record store specializing in reggae continues its efforts with this volume II, where King Tubby is accompanied by the Ring Craft Posse. It notably brings together Sly and Robbie or the Barrett brothers of the Wailers. And gives voice to the greatest Jamaican voices like Ken Boothe, Cornell Campbell, Delroy Wilson, Dennis Brown...
