100% natural and renewable material, sheep wool is used in plates or rollers for acoustic and/or thermal insulation of buildings

The development of the new E+C- label, the existence of the label Biosourced Buildings, the evolution of HQE, Leeds and Breeam standards to an increased consideration of the environmental imprint of buildings, ... all this pushes designers andCompanies to be built increasingly using natural raw materials.

For the big ordered, the wooden construction-in classic wood frame, in laminated-glued-pumps, in structural panels, in coat walls for the facades, in cladding, ...-provides many solutions. But, beyond the wood, what are the renewable and directly organic solutions available?

We know the straw in filling of the facades, even the structural straw. For the second work and the interior fittings, we must not forget the sheep wool, its many advantages and the various products for the building based on wool: thermal and acoustic insulators, not to mention the coverings of walls and floors.

As thermal isolation, sheep wool is available in semi-rigid panels or rollers in thicknesses from 5 to 20 cm.© Ecological Building Systems

The advantages of sheep wool

Mouton wool is a natural material, but transformed.About half of the mowed, once or twice a year on sheep, is not suitable for transformation into wires, used in textile industry. In particular, because the fibers are not long enough.

Part of the rest is recovered by the building materials industry, directly from producers - breeders - or transformers - spinning.Mouton wool is consumed at a temperature of approximately 560 ° C, does not give off toxic smoke and dies up (self-extinguishing).

Most products for wool -based building have rankings D, E F.The wool is anallergen: it does not cause any skin allergy or respiratory allergy. It irreversibly fixes and absorbs VOCs, including formaldehyde.Wool absorbs and releases humidity: it can absorb up to 30% of its own humidity weight, without losing its insulating properties.

At 30% water content, the λ is increased by 0.0050 W/m.K about. But all the same, sheep wool is suitable for wet premises.Wool is 100% recyclable. Finally, it is antistatic, which makes it particularly appreciable in flooring.

Sheep wool in thermal insulation

Then, this raw wool, but washed, carded (detangled), is transformed into several different materials for the building.Added by approximately 20% of thermofusible polyester fibers and anti-insect products, the wool is transformed into semi-rigid panels (approximately 11 € HT/m2 for 5 cm thick) or in rollers of thermal insulation (about 9,25 € HT/m² for 10 cm thick, 12 € HT/m2 for 20 cm thick).

They are used for the insulation of the roofs in creeping, for insulation from the inside of the vertical walls, for the flat insulation of the lost attic. These panels have a B2 fire ranking most often.

Sous forme de laine en vrac (environ 20 € HT/m3), la laine de mouton est soufflée pour l’isolation des combles perdus ou des vides de construction.Naturlaine even developed an insulation kit for sheep wool roof windows (€ 41 excl..It consists of 4 strips of 1.25 m x 10 cm.

No Acermi certification

In bulk, sheep wool has a classification in fire D-S3, D0.It should be noted that no insulating based on sheep wool is certified by the Acermi for the moment.Manufacturers of sheep wool insulation attribute it to it λ between 0.035 and 0.050 W/m.K.

At least two French manufacturers are present on this market: Naturlaine and Sotextho with its Fibranatur brand. The products of other European manufacturers, including those of the British Ecological Building Systems and Dutch Doschawol, are available from specialized traders in the radius of natural construction materials: Kensai, Ecobati, my Ecological Insulation, etc..

Sheep wool in acoustic insulation

The acoustic performance of sheep wool is not negligible, even in its classic forms. For its 10 cm thick sheep wool panels, thermolaine claims an acoustic weakening up to 55 dB (A), according to the implementation.

The underlaying felt in pure wool of Fibranatur (5 mm thick) is recommended by its manufacturer for the rupture of phonic bridges under partitions, floors, etc..But the most interesting about the acoustic effects of wool is certainly the Austrian solution Whisperwool (Whisperwool.at) developed by aunt Lotte Design GmbH.

This manufacturer was present at the Bau show in Munich last January.Based in Innsbruck, the Austrian industrialist, who uses only Tyrol sheep wool, has developed a very special manufacturing solution. It produces panels of 900 x 900 x 12 to 14 mm (3 kg/panel approximately) by compression.

Panels available in 3 colors

Their surface is raw, ended with a low felt, flat or decorated with 3D reliefs. The panels are currently available in three natural anthracite colors, silver gray and natural white.Other shades are possible on request.

Le fabricant revendique pour ses panneaux, une valeur du coefficient d’absorption acoustique pondéré αw jusqu’à 0,9.A value 0 denotes the total absence of absorption or a total reflection of the sound. While a value of 1 translates the total absorption of sound. αw est calculé selon la norme ISO 11654.

The Whisperwool panels land in suspended ceiling under chevrons (around 250 € excl. Tax/m² supplied and installed) or on the wall on chevrons or glued. On the wall, the pose on chevrons gives better acoustic absorption.Whisperwool can also be bent for a pose around pipes, for example. It is classified "difficult to flammable", according to in 13501-1.

The wool used in the production of Whisperwool acoustic panels comes from Austrian Tyrol, in the immediate vicinity of the factory installed in Innsbruck. It is washed and mixed with a natural binding fiber, more compressed in panels.© Aunt Lotte GmbH

Towards compressed wool offices?

The material used by Tante Lotte for its Whisperwool panels is made up of wool and a natural binder fiber. It retains all the advantages of wool: hydrophilic character, VOC fixing, acoustic absorption, etc..Whisperwool panels will be placed in France in a pharmacy with a 3D relief finish drawn by the architect of the operation (a site that the editorial staff will therefore follow).

Whisperwool is also at airports (an airport in the process of equipment in Tyrol), in the Halls of Hotels, Hospitals, in concert and restaurant rooms, in recording studios,in office buildings.A new market, not attended by the manufacturer, is in full development: crèche equipment.

It is now possible to incorporate lighting into the whisperwool panels placed on the ceiling, as well as an electric heating solution by radiating infrared infrared.Aunt Lotte offers a small selection of lighting sources and a mixed Lighting/Infrared Heating device.

Incorporated lighting

If the customer wants to incorporate other lighting sources, Aunt Lotte studies requests and gives an opinion on the feasibility. The industrialist has other projects for his material.First, triple function rails for suspended ceiling: support for whisperwool panels, ventilation air diffusion and temperate air for heating and refreshment.

Second, a much more daring project: building compressed woolen office furniture. The idea is quite simple: in an open space, it is better to absorb the noise as close as possible to its emission, directly on the desk, rather than further on the wall or the ceiling.

This solution, if it is technically possible, will significantly improve the acoustic comfort of the offices in OpenSpace. In a new office of office building targeting a high ecological -HQE, LEEDS, BREEAM, DGNG label, ... -, the 100% recyclable character of the material will also be a plus.
