With the summer and the hot weather, it is common for parents to buy an inflatable pool to install in the garden so that their children can cool off. However, you have to be particularly vigilant because the risk of drowning is real and toddlers sometimes decide to swim alone, taking advantage of a moment of inattention, thus increasing the danger. This is shown by two tragic stories that took place between June 11 and 13, 2021.

Two children die, drowned in an inflatable pool

The first incident took place on Friday in Macqueville (Charente-Maritime), reports Sud Ouest. A 3-year-old boy escaped his parents' vigilance and drowned in his father's above-ground swimming pool. The second drama took place on Sunday in Louzac-Saint-André (Charente), when a 2-year-old child was playing in an inflatable swimming pool. For reasons still unknown, he drowned, reports La Charente Libre.

Precautions to take with inflatable pools

The authorities have recalled the importance of being vigilant when you have young children and a swimming pool. If you have an inflatable paddling pool for children, it is essential that he is constantly under your supervision when he bathes. When swimming is over and you move away, to prevent your child from wanting to go back without you being present, it must be emptied. It may not be very ecological, but it is the best way to prevent the risk of drowning!

In the case of family-size inflatable above-ground pools, your child must also remain under your permanent supervision during swimming. When it is finished, it must be protected by a tarpaulin that the child cannot remove alone. Care should also be taken to remove ladders and any other objects that a child might use to climb it.

As a reminder, private swimming pools must imperatively be equipped with a barrier or a cover, a veranda-type shelter and/or an alarm which warns you in the event of immersion.

If, despite all these precautions, your child should fall into the pool and drown, you must react quickly. Start the first aid gestures and immediately call 15 (Samu) or 18 (fire brigade).
