The trend

In 1931, the avant-garde seamstress slide the epaulettes to redefine the silhouette of women and add build to their shoulders.Actress Joan Crawford popularizes them with her extravagant dresses, drawn by Adrian for films produced by MGM in the 1930s and 1940s.

It was during the Second World War that the epaulettes are democratized: women invade the labor market and appropriate their shoulderings, associated with military clothing.Intimately linked to the 1980s, the shoulderlet represents the place of women in society.

It is an image of strength, confidence, power. The shoulder should symbolize the feminist movement.

Ça revient : les épaulettes | La Presse

This season, they are everywhere, in the jackets, coats, jackets, sweaters, and even attached to the shoulders of t-shirts and dresses.Compared to other years, they adopt several forms and styles, sometimes lighter, other times more pronounced, almost exaggerated.

Where do we see her?

The shoulderlet is one of several fall-winter 2020 collections of the best known and renowned designers, from Milan to New York via Paris.

The difference this year is that the trend is more accepted. Our eye got used to it.»»

Why is it coming back?

The epaulettes bring this strong, assertive silhouette, where we are no longer embarrassed to take our place. It is a garment in which you feel good and control.

His colleague Ryma Brixe adds that the military style is very trendy today, which could also explain the return of the shoulder.

We want to adopt it

Easy to wear, shoulder?Yes and no, say the experts in mode.

For Louise Labrecque, if we play the very structured shoulder, it is wise to balance the silhouette: "I would not put too wide pants," she comments, I would rather go with a tapered leg.»»

What if we want to get started, what do we buy?Almost timeless, the jacket or the coat are good choices. Catherine Hébert offers to start with a little shoulder, neither too long nor too thick.
