World milk marketsThe balance between supply and demand should remain stable at the end of 2021

Find the interview with Benoît Rouyer, economist at Cniel:

Benoît Rouyer, economist at Cniel, spoke in mid-September 2021 on the Space-TV set to take stock of the dairy markets. He explains that in one year, global milk production has evolved in a heterogeneous way depending on the production areas: it is up significantly (about 3% over one year) in New Zealand and the United States, but more moderate in within the European Union (0.5% between September 2020 and September 2021), where it fell by 0.7% in July 2021.

Are we heading towards global overproduction? For the economist, the concerns relate more to 2022. By the end of 2021, “the balance between supply and demand should be more or less stable”, without major change because demand is relatively strong.

For industrial dairy products, the trend has been stabilizing for several months, notes Benoît Rouyer, with butter prices around €4,000/t and skimmed milk powder prices around €2,500/t. In this context, it is the increase in charges that worries: “All raw materials are seeing their prices soar with the Chinese recovery. This is also the case for the packaging costs faced by dairies. »

What prospects can we expect then? For the economist, everything will depend on the strength of the economic recovery in China, but it seems certain that the prices of the various raw materials will remain at high levels.
